Santiago de Chile feels more like Europe than South America: orderly traffic instead of honking horns and a cityscape that could just as easily be found further north. Santiago is a modern city with imposing skyscrapers, large parks and vibrant urban neighborhoods. It is as close to the sea as it is to the ski resorts of the Andes. And although the sun shines here in the north, it brings mild, Mediterranean temperatures almost all year round.

About seven million Chileans live in Santiago - roughly one-third of the total population. The capital generates 40 percent of Chile's economic output, especially in services and industry.
