12 x 1000 Euro for social initiatives

When companies make donations, the sums usually go to large organizations. We do the same, but at the same time we want to support the social commitment of our employees: With our "12x1,000" initiative, our COSMOnauts worldwide have the opportunity to submit their charitable projects, organizations and initiatives. Every month, we support a project close to our hearts.

12,000 euros per year for social initiatives

Many companies make donations to charitable organizations. Large charities often receive more frequent and larger donations. Since everyone is familiar with Greenpeace, the Red Cross or Amnesty International, it is easier to support these organizations with a peace of mind. For COSMO CONSULT it is also important to support local and regional projects. Here COSMO CONSULT employees from all over the world come into play. Many of them volunteer in their free time for social initiatives or know from their own experience which institutions do a particularly good job.

In order to utilize this knowledge and at the same time to support the social engagement of our employees, we have started the initiative "12x1000". Here's how it works: every month, we allocate 1000 euros for COSMOnauts to use for their charitable projects, organizations or initiatives. The only requirement is a short profile or a short video presenting the project. Every month we will draw a winner from the submitted proposals to support their favorite project with 1,000 Euros. The following projects and organizations have already been supported by the 12x1,000 campaign:

Social initiatives in 2024

TuS Ascheberg 18 e.V.

Ascheberg is a small town in Münsterland, Germany. For the handball department of the local sports club TuS Ascheberg 18 e.V., the "Törn" is the highlight of the year: the young participants of the club go to the North Sea island of Wangerooge for a few days in the sand. Together, they discover the beauty of the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site and they strengthen their social skills and self-confidence, especially if they are traveling without their parents for the first time. In the mixed group of 6 to 18 year olds, the participants learn to be considerate of each other, to put their own interests aside and to look out for others. The young handball players decide on the travel program together.

For the group's volunteer leaders, the trip to the North Sea is an opportunity for personal development and to strengthen volunteerism in the club and community. Janine, HR Generalist at COSMO CONSULT Münster, has been playing handball at TuS Ascheberg for more than 14 years and was back in Wangerooge as a coach this year. The club depends on donations to make the trip to the North Sea possible. With the support she received from the 12 x 1,000 Euro campaign, Janine was able to add to the travel fund

Gymnastics and sports community (TSG) Bonn

TSG Bonn, a sports club, was initiated by a group of parents. One of the founders is Selver, a father who is passionate about sports and who works as program manager for COSMO CONSULT in Cologne. Together with his friends, he managed to get three sports groups going--football, boxing and gymnastics--in a very short time and to start taking part in regional competitions. The small sports club, which currently has 85 members, is growing steadily because of the strong interest in the region. At the same time, Selver is working hard to improve the club's facilities for the children. He met for talks with the city of Bonn to arrange for the children to be able to practice outside during the warm summer months. And he came up with a wonderful idea to make sports even more fun for the kids: a bouncy castle. Thanks to the funds raised from the 12 x 1,000 campaign, he was able to cover more than half of the purchase costs, fulfilling the children's dream soon after. The little ones can now look forward to this very special warm-up experience.

Mukoviszidose e.V.

Cystic fibrosis is a congenital metabolic disease that affects only around 8,000 people in Germany. Because it is so rare, little is known about the disease. Those affected often suffer from digestive and  respiratory problems. They are dependent on an environment that is as free of germs as possible, and as a result they are often severely restricted in their daily lives. Daniel, team manager at COSMO CONSULT in Münster, has experienced this terrible disease first hand, because his little nephew suffers from it. Playing outside or helping to empty the dishwasher at home are unthinkable for little Emil. To raise awareness of the disease and promote research, he and his wife support the cystic fibrosis association Mukoviszidose e.V. The two collect money at fundraising events and take part in MUKOmove. MUKOmove is a competition in which the aim is to break movement records. With the donation from the 12 x 1,000 euro campaign, Daniel was able to significantly increase the volume of donations this year.

Zukunft Mentoren für Kinder e.V., mentoring for children

Not all children get a good start, for example because family circumstances are complicated or integration is difficult. Having an adult from a different environment and with an independent perspective to support them can help overcome hurdles. The Hamburg-based non-profit organization Zukunft Mentoren für Kinder e.V. brings children and young people aged 6 to 16 together with adult mentors. Mentors meet with the children two to four times a month for at least a year to share experiences, listen to each other, and provide encouragement and support outside of family and school. Sometimes this opens up completely new perspectives, such as learning to swim. Ines, Global Support Manager at COSMO CONSULT, has been mentoring Melina for a year now. They are just one of 130 such tandems in Hamburg. Thanks to the donation from the 12 x 1,000 euro campaign, she was able to fulfil Melina's wish be part of the this tandem.

The RISE project at TU Berlin

Medicine can often only provide limited assistance to paraplegics. But modern technology can sometimes fill the gap where therapies are lacking. A multidisciplinary team of more than 40 students at the Technical University of Berlin is currently developing a robotic exoskeleton. This exoskeleton a wearable device that makes mechanical interaction between technology and the body possible, thus facilitating movement. One day, people might even use them to walk and regain some independence. Nicola, a student working at COSMO CONSULT in Berlin, is actively involved in the RISE project. However, it will be a while before the exoskeleton is ready for practical use. A first milestone on this path is the CYBATHLON at TU Zurich in October. This is an international competition that brings together technology developers and physically disadvantaged people. The platform shows how technical assistance systems help people to cope with everyday situations on their own. Dialog with the public and sharing experiences with other developers is important for advancing RISE. However, participating is expensive. Nicole was able to help cover the costs with her donation from the 12 x 1,000 euro campaign.

Social initiatives in 2023

Suzi Animal Handicap

Animals often face an uncertain future when they become seriously ill or are critically injured in an accident. Many families do not have the time to care for the animals properly, and sometimes do not have the money to buy medicine and provide a suitable care environment. As a result, the animals end up on the streets, in inappropriate animal shelters, or are even put to sleep. The French association Suzi Animal Handicap cares for severely disabled and seriously ill animals of all kinds in a loving environment. The animals include about 90 dogs, 85 cats, 30 guinea pigs and 45 horses, ponies and donkeys. Most of them are in permanent care, where they are looked after, given medication or fitted with orthopaedic aids to help them walk. This allows them to live out the rest of their lives with dignity in an animal-friendly environment. This great service is 97% donor funded. Johanna, HR Generalist in the Paris office, and Valérie Cichowski, Consultant in Lyon, have been supporting Suzi Animal Handicap for many years. At almost the same time, they were winners of the 12 x 1,000 campaign. Their double donation also helps the association come closer to its goal of having its own veterinary clinic.

Friedenskinder e.V.

Sri Lanka, the large island country south of India, is one of the poorest countries in the world. In 2022 the country defaulted on its foreign debt, which triggered a severe economic crisis. As a result, many found themselves in absolute poverty, with some losing their homes and ending up living on the streets. Seth, a blind nine-year-old boy, was among those affected. His family had to vacate the humble hut that had been their home. Or the Ilairajah family, who first lost their house and farm due to the father's poor health and now have to get by on a precarious income.

Corinna, who works in the marketing department of COSMO CONSULT Würzburg, has found a direct way to help. Through the association Friedenskinder e.V., donations are delivered to the mother of a friend who is in direct contact with those in need. Corinna can make a big difference with the help of the 12 x 1,000 euro campaign, because the cost of living in Sri Lanka is low. The plan is to use the donation to support two house-building projects that will benefit both families.

Rescue dog team of the Bavarian Red Cross in the Erlagen-Höchstadt district organisation

Helping people and saving lives - that is the motivation of the Bavarian Red Cross rescue dog team. They search for missing persons and are among the first on the scene when an accident has buried people. They work closely with the police, fire brigade and other rescue services. But very few people realise this: Although dog handlers and sniffer dogs are trained professionals, they are not paid for their work. The teams work purely on a voluntary basis and cover the costs of travelling, training and equipment themselves. Boris, Managing Director of the COSMO CONSULT Group, has been involved with the rescue dog team for many years. His team alone recently clocked up 2,341 hours on 116 missions a year. New clothing regulations have recently been introduced. For his team, this means digging deep into their pockets and paying for new trousers themselves. When Boris tried his luck in the 12 x 1,000 euro competition, it worked out. With his winnings, he was able to help his team with a substantial subsidy.

Skool Hungary

The non-profit organisation Skool Hungary is committed to giving children access to IT technology at an early age. Programming courses, mentoring programmes and camps are offered for this purpose. The organisation is particularly keen to get young girls interested in programming and to support them in the long term.

Krisztina, Account Manager at COSMO CONSULT in Budapest, has been a volunteer at Skool Hungary for more than seven years. She has already organised several programming camps and actively supported many other programmes and initiatives. She recently took part in the 12 x 1,000 euro campaign and was lucky. With the 1,000 euros she won, she organised a robotics session for 14 enthusiastic boys and girls at the COSMO CONSULT office in Budapest. She was supported by skool instructor Lilli and other COSMOnauts. During this session, not only the children's eyes lit up, but also the robots' built-in LEDs.

SOS Cat

Cats are cuddly, playful, simply adorable and great companions through life. But not all cats are well. In Styria, Austria, the SOS Katze organisation looks after stray, injured and abandoned animals. The organisation has no capacity of its own and initially places cats in need of help with private "foster parents". As soon as the animals have recovered from their ordeal and are healthy, a new, permanent home is found for them. However, the dedicated members often look after the furry friends themselves. This incurs high costs for food, care and vets, which have to be borne by the carers themselves.

SOS Katze is financed by donations and the sale of home-made items such as pet beds and cat toys. Simone, Finance and HR Accountant at COSMO CONSULT in Graz, has been supporting the organisation for many years. She takes in cats, finds homes for them and helps to make and dispatch items for sale. She recently took part in the 12 x 1,000 euro campaign - and was lucky. With her 1,000 euros, she is now helping to pay vets and help other four-legged friends.

For the Small Town School of Vereb

Vereb is a small community south-west of the Hungarian capital Budapest. Tamás, who works as a software developer at COSMO CONSULT Budapest, lives here. There is a small school in Vereb. Almost all the children who live there attend it. And although the children enjoy going to school and learn a lot there, they were missing something: a playground where they could run around and have adventures together. When Tamás heard about this, he applied for the 12 x 1,000 euro campaign with this small project - and was lucky. He used his winnings to support the school-related foundation Vereb Kistelepülés Iskolájáért, which had been campaigning for a children's playground for a long time. It took some time, but in the end the children from Vereb were overjoyed to take possession of their playground. And thanks to Tamás, it has even become a little bigger.

Astrid Lindgren Centre - Association for Education and Culture

At the Astrid Lindgren Centre in Vienna, reform pedagogy and a holistic approach merge to create a magical place. Here, children from first to ninth grade learn to spread their wings. In the unique environment of the school, they are allowed to develop at their own pace and give free rein to their creativity. In this way, the value of each child is recognised and individual talents are encouraged at an early age. The children acquire knowledge and skills that help them to think responsibly and open-mindedly. Thomas, General Manager at COSMO CONSULT in Vienna, and his wife support the school in various areas. He recently won the 12 x 1,000 euro campaign organised by COSMO CONSULT. The money was used to purchase a raised bed and a wooden bench for the school. The new garden equipment was assembled and inaugurated together as part of a workshop. The children then planted the bed with beaming eyes and have been looking after it themselves ever since.

Future thanks to you

The many crises of recent years have hit those who already had little the hardest. In Kenya, for example, tourism is only recovering very slowly after the coronavirus years. As there are no social security systems, many families are experiencing hard times. The "Zukunft Dank Dir" association from Weiz in Styria has been involved in the East African country for several years: with sponsorships for children and families, house renovations, well construction projects and food aid. Eveline supports the organisation alongside her work as a project manager at COSMO CONSULT in Graz. At the last Weiz Rally in Austria, she sold admission wristbands for two days. 3.50 per wristband went to the aid organisation, which is using the money to finance the construction of a children's home. A place of hope and security for those who urgently need help. When Eveline won 12 x 1,000 euros in the fundraising campaign, she was able to increase the budget once again. A photovoltaic system was also purchased to supply the children's home with its own electricity. After all, there is plenty of sunshine in Kenya.

Schalksmühle Refugee Aid Network

How well refugees arrive here is already decided in the first few days. Will the accommodation work out? Are there enough German and integration courses? How quickly are children integrated into schools and daycare centres? The local communities are responsible for all of these questions. But without the many people who are involved in helping refugees throughout Germany, little of this would work. One of these people is Volker. In addition to his job as a senior consultant in Cologne, he also organises literacy courses for the refugee aid organisation in Schalksmühle, a small town south of Hagen.

Volker was recently lucky. He won 1,000 euros in the 12 x 1,000 euros campaign organised by COSMO CONSULT. This enabled him to give refugee children, for example from Ukraine or the Arab world, something for the start of school: school bags and satchels. The refugee organisation was also able to purchase urgently needed school books. In this way, Volker helped to give the children a good start in their new home.

Caritas care centre "Gruft"

Around 12,000 people live in Vienna without a fixed abode. Around 1,000 of them literally live on the street. Without any comfort and without the possibility of cooking something to eat that is reasonably healthy. The "Gruft" is a Caritas care centre that specifically helps these people: with places to sleep, washrooms, clothing, advice and support services as well as hot meals. Cooking for the Crypt is an almost legendary event in which dedicated small teams cook for around 150 homeless people. This is a real challenge, as it involves preparing around 21 kg of meat, 16 kg of side dishes and two tubs of salad - not including dessert. The kitchen is provided by the Gruft and the cookery team brings the food.

When Martina, Team Manager Consulting ERP at the Vienna site, won 12 x 1,000 euros in the campaign in April, she had the necessary change to organise a meal in the crypt with her colleagues after work. The menu included smoked pork - a traditional Austrian dish - with dumplings and lentils, cakes and slices. The evening was a complete success. And best of all: the 1,000 euro donation is enough for another cookery event.

Oldenburg helps e.V.

Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, there was great concern for the people affected. Also in Oldenburg. A private initiative gave rise to the Oldenburg hilft e.V. association, which was joined by committed citizens and companies. Together, they collect relief supplies, organise transports to the crisis areas and provide refugees in Oldenburg with housing. The helpers often renovate empty houses and flats. There is now a creative house, an art café and a counselling centre for refugees. Vanessa, Junior Consultant at COSMO CONSULT in Münster, supports the organisation. She recently made candles together with refugees and wants to get involved in the art café or sorting the donations in future. The fact that she hit the jackpot in the 12x1,000 euro campaign came in very handy. She used the money to help organise an aid transport to bring medicine and food to the region around Chervonohrad in western Ukraine. From there, the relief supplies will be sent directly to the crisis area to alleviate the greatest need.

We for India

Personal commitment often arises in the immediate environment. For Gerrit, Head of Finance at COSMO CONSULT, it was his daughter's school. The school has been supporting several partner schools in India for many years. As part of the "We for India" project, pupils collect money at stalls at school festivals or through fundraising campaigns, which is used to improve the situation at the partner schools. This has already enabled buildings to be extended, water supplies to be optimised and materials and furniture to be purchased. The donations also help to ensure that more girls stay at school longer instead of going to work early.

Instead of working with aid organisations, groups of pupils travel to India themselves once or twice a year for around three weeks. They help to implement the projects on site and live closely with the Indian pupils and their families during this time. They cook, eat and share everything together - just as is customary in India. With the donation from the 12 x 1,000 euro campaign, Gerrit can do even more for the partner schools this year. "This project is particularly close to my heart because our children are also learning for their own lives here. It teaches values and helps them to develop their own attitude and healthy consumer behaviour," he says.

Kinderarche Sachsen e.V.

Kinderarche Sachsen e.V. looks after around 300 children and young people in its own facilities and residential groups. Most of the adolescents come from problematic backgrounds, in the worst cases they are traumatised. The Kinderarche is run by the Diakonisches Werk der Evangelischen Kirchen. One of its facilities is the Haus am Czorneboh. Located in the middle of nature between Bautzen and Löbau, the children can come to rest here, find themselves and bravely start a new life. It is currently home to 25 young people aged three and over. They live together in three residential groups.

Antje is Team Lead Talent Attraction at COSMO CONSULT in Dresden and has been supporting the work of the Kinderarche for many years. With the 12x1,000 euro campaign, Antje can do even more for the children this year than usual. "I have already visited many such organisations, but I was particularly touched by the house at Czornebuh. The people there see their work as a mission and are very passionate and dedicated to what they do," says Antje. The donation goes directly to the children.

Home For Your Children

Adopting a child is a big step. It's an adventure for everyone involved, and no one can say how it will turn out in the end or what the outcome will be. There are often more applicants than children. And yet it is complicated to find the right family. After all, every child has their own story and their own ideas. Older and sick children can be particularly difficult to place. It is precisely these children that Hogar Para Sus Ninios from Ecuador looks after. The organisation runs children's homes in Quito and Latacunga and is committed to sponsoring and adopting children. The organisation is financed exclusively through donations and volunteer work. Andrea, Customer Service Manager at COSMO CONSULT in Quito, has been closely associated with the organisation since she adopted her two children there twelve years ago. She recently won 12 x 1,000 euros as part of the campaign. The donation will enable her to finance a month of meals, medical care, leisure activities and 24-hour care by a nanny for one child.

Social initiatives in 2022

Integrative Riding e. V.

Intimate relationships characterised by mutual trust can develop between ponies and humans. Ponies are therefore ideal for therapy. The Dresden-based organisation Integratives Reiten e. V. is therefore keen to give children access to this wonderful way of spending their free time. After all, what could be more fun than spending time with an animal friend in an idyllic setting?

It's not just about riding, but also about the daily work with the animals, which includes grooming, caring for them and mucking out the stables. Bettina works as a product manager in Dresden and has already volunteered for the organisation. Most recently, in October, she helped with the children's riding lessons and the apple harvest or took over the stable duties together with her daughter. With the 1,000 euros she recently won through the 12 x 1,000 euros campaign, she wants to organise further training for the many volunteers at the association, among other things.

Parents' Association of the Peter Rosegger Primary School

As a financial accountant, Astrid juggles business figures on a daily basis at the Graz site. In her private life, one thing is particularly close to her heart: providing the best possible support for schoolchildren. In the parents' association of the Peter Rosegger primary school in Graz, she organises events together with other parents and accompanies events with ice cream, cakes and other treats.

Astrid took part in the 12x1,000 campaign for the second time - and was lucky again. This time, the parents' association used the donation to raise environmental awareness among pupils and parents. Various activities were financed that focused on reducing waste orCO2. The best example is the rally, where every child who was not brought by car was given a pretzel, water, fruit and vegetables on arrival at school. There was also an ice cream cone for every child at the school party at the end of June and at the start of the summer holidays.

Wiener Neustadt Scout Group

It is perhaps the best-known youth movement in the world. With their uniform and typical neckerchief, they are recognised all over the world - by almost everyone: The Scouts. Even though the roots of the movement go back to the beginning of the 20th century, its ideas are still modern: Teamwork, social commitment, open to all people regardless of origin, race or religion. Scouts are in harmony with nature, make new friends and organise their leisure time together. Patrick, a software engineer at the Vienna site, is a scout leader for children aged between five and seven. He lives by a value system that prioritises sustainability, for example. During the summer holidays, he supervised a scout group at a holiday camp. As the children come from different family backgrounds, it often happens that some of them do not take part in such leisure activities for financial reasons. This year everything was different. Patrick won the 12 x 1,000 competition. He used the 1,000 euros he won to support those children who would otherwise have stayed at home.

Romania Without Orphans Alliance (AFRO)

Children need the backing, love and support of their family. But not all children grow up in such an environment. In Romania, more than 50,000 children live without family protection and care. The aid organisation Alianța România Fără Orfani (AFRO) is made up of churches, companies, public and private individuals. They help the children, for example with therapy programmes and by integrating them into a family in the long term. Sorin, a software developer at COSMO CONSULT in Romania, and his wife have been members of AFRO for almost five years. This year, they adopted two girls - first Ariana and shortly afterwards Lea. AFRO actively supported them during the adoption process and ensured that the four of them grew into a family within a very short space of time. This experience has inspired the new parents so much that they now actively support the organisation - for example at events or by taking part in marathons.

Once a year, the association organises a refresher camp with special training sessions, joint games and discussion sessions with experienced therapists. For the adoptive parents, this is an important opportunity to share experiences with other families. Sorin recently accompanied the camp as a trainer and was able to contribute to the funding for the second time through the 12 x 1,000 euro campaign. With his donation, he is helping to support orphans and their adoptive families with advice, support, training and therapy programmes

Willingshausen fire brigade

Christian is a consultant at COSMO CONSULT in Frankfurt. In his spare time, he is involved in the volunteer fire brigade in his community, Willinghausen in North Hesse. Youth work is particularly close to his heart. The aim is to get children and young people interested in tasks such as putting out fires, rescuing people and fire safety. However, the fire brigade also has other tasks: For example, it collects donations at events, provides Ukrainian refugees in the community with emergency accommodation or looks after them 24 hours a day.

Christian was lucky when he took part in the COSMO CONSULT Group's 12 x 1,000 euro campaign. He invested the money he won in a fire brigade party in mid-June. He was able to use it to pay for a tent, catering and a bouncy castle for the children. He also supervised the assembly and dismantling and carried out an emergency drill.

Through his involvement with the youth fire brigade, he hopes to inspire more young people to get involved so that the community can continue to be optimally protected in the future.

Animal Care e.V.

For most people, Mauritius is a holiday paradise on the other side of the world. However, if you were to ask the street dogs and stray cats living there, their answer would probably be less paradisiacal. "When we spent our holiday there, I realised that this place must be hell on earth for dogs and cats," reports Jeannette, who works as a management assistant in Würzburg. She saw malnourished, injured, exhausted and deeply sad animals.

The Animal Care organisation helps to prevent such animal suffering in advance by neutering cats and dogs. It supports partners on Fuerteventura and Mauritius in implementing neutering projects and financing food, care and medication. Another way to help the animals is through flight sponsorships. Holidaymakers take animals home with them on their return flight. They are vaccinated, have papers and are adopted by animal welfare organisations or their new family at their destination. "I was a flight sponsor myself, have been in regular contact with Animal Care ever since and would do it again at any time," says Jeannette. With the donation from the 12 x 1,000 euro campaign, she is helping the organisation to save more animals from certain death.

Solidarity Network of Pallejà

Xarxa Solidaria de Palleja is an organisation that looks after people in need in Palleja, a suburb of Barcelona. It helps with food, clothing and accommodation, for example. Mariano is a project manager at COSMO CONSULT in Barcelona and supports the organisation's work together with his wife. The two of them were also among the volunteers who took part in the "Donation, Cancer & Ukraine Day" in Barcelona. Among other things, they sold bracelets to raise money for charitable causes and Ukrainian refugees. For the second time, Mariano secured a donation from the 12x1,000 campaign to support the aid organisation even better. The money was used to buy relief supplies such as food and drugstore items and distribute them to those in need.

Medicines for Ukraine

In a situation where large aid organisations have difficulties reaching people in need. In places that are too dangerous to be present with their own staff - in such cases, small private initiatives can fill the gap. That's what Yuri, Senior Software Engineer at COSMO CONSULT with Latvian roots, thought when ex-COSMOnaut André with Belarusian roots told him about his idea to bring medicine and relief supplies to Mukachevo in western Ukraine himself. He has family connections in Ukraine: his parents-in-law work as doctors in the city with its 85,000 inhabitants. Although it is not located directly in the combat zone, it is heavily burdened by internally displaced persons. There is a shortage of everything, but especially medicines and technical devices such as power banks and mobile phones. "Providing these things is one thing, bringing them safely into the country and distributing them there is something completely different.

Family connections can play an important role in this," says Yuri. When he submitted the project as part of the 12 x 1,000 donation initiative, he was lucky and was able to support André's initiative with 1,000 euros worth of medication. André's parents-in-law were visiting Berlin two weeks after the outbreak of the war and personally brought the medicines to Ukraine. There they were handed over to the local volunteer organisation Volontery of Zakarpatska, which then distributed them directly to those affected and to hospitals. Zakarpatska is the region of Ukraine in which the city of Mukachevo is located. "I know it's a drop in the ocean, but if there are lots of campaigns like this, then you can also make a difference with direct initiatives from person to person and at least alleviate the suffering of the Ukrainians a little," thinks Yuri. André is already organising the next fundraising campaign, this time on a larger scale. He would be delighted to receive further donations. If you want to take part, you can donate via Paypal at https://www.paypal.com/pools/c/8ImSmEERbU until 30 April.

Running against cancer

Every year, half a million people in Germany are diagnosed with cancer. Around half of them die from it. Almost everyone knows such tragic fates from their own family or circle of friends. Dusica, Office Manager at COSMO CONSULT in Berlin, is no different. She learnt about the run against cancer from a friend who worked in cancer research for a long time. A charity run organised once a year by the Berlin School of Integrative Oncology (BSIO), which took place in the Wedding district at the end of March. Participants in the run receive their starting number in exchange for a donation to support cancer research. All proceeds are used for basic research and therapy projects.

This is not enough for Dusica. She took part in the 12x1,000 campaign with the initiative, was lucky and was able to help cancer research with a further 1,000 euros. "Far too many people suffer from cancer. That's why it's important to support research so that one day you can live with cancer, just like with many other diseases," she says.

1,000 portions of ice cream for shining children's eyes

Many children experience a childhood as it should not really be: they grow up in difficult circumstances, suffer from illnesses or are disadvantaged in other ways. Unlike adults, however, they usually deal with difficult situations in a positive and optimistic way. And they can also be wholeheartedly happy about small gestures and experiences. Michael may have thought something similar when he took part in the 12x1,000 project - and won. He works as a Team & Senior Project Manager at COSMO CONSULT in Austria. With the 1,000 euros behind him, he knocked on the door of Andreas Resch from Buburuza Eis. The ice cream factory's products have already been voted Austria's best ice cream several times. "Andreas was immediately on board and contributed to the costs, so in the end we actually ended up with 1,000 ice cream tubs," recalls Michael.

Fully loaded, he and other COSMOnauts distributed the sweet cargo to children in charitable organisations, foundations and a hospital. "We went to the SOS Children's Village in Strübing, Leonstein Castle, the Kepler University Hospital in Linz, the women's refuge in Steyr and the Lebenshilfe residential home in Steyr. There were many touching moments when we handed out the ice cream. It was great to put a smile on the children's faces just before Christmas - despite their sometimes difficult situations," Michael looks back.

Stairlift for Viennese boys with disabilities

Doing good can sometimes be quite simple: Together with friends from the Vienna Lions Club, Wolfgang, Managing Director of COSMO CONSULT GmbH from Austria, organises a mulled wine stand in Vienna's city centre every Christmas. In addition to the popular hot drink, sandwiches with homemade spreads are also sold there for a good cause. The group uses the net proceeds to support charitable organisations such as DEBRA Austria, which is committed to research into the rare butterfly disease in children. "These children have extremely sensitive skin and are therefore very vulnerable. There is currently no cure for this disease," explains Wolfgang.

Due to the pandemic, however, Vienna's city centre was far less busy this year than at normal times. Tourists in particular were absent. Later on, the Austrian lockdown put an early end to mulled wine sales. Fortunately, the COSMO CONSULT Group organised the 12 x 1,000 campaign. Wolfgang took part and was lucky. He was able to top up the donation box by 1,000 euros. "We will use the total proceeds to buy a stairlift for a boy with a disability from Vienna. This will help him to make his everyday life easier and more pleasant," says Wolfgang happily.

Albert Einstein Grammar School & Riedlen Primary School

A lot is taught in schools, but not everything. Outside of the curriculum, knowledge transfer depends primarily on the private commitment of parents and teachers. Programming is a good example. The subject is becoming relevant in more and more professions, but plays a minor role - if at all - at upper secondary school. Markus is a DevOps engineer from Ulm. When he senses an opportunity to get children and young people interested in coding and IT, he is quick to get involved. This is one of the reasons why he took part in the 12 x 1,000 euro campaign - and he was lucky.

He invested the donation in mini educational computers from the micro:bit foundation. He used them to visit a 5th grade class at the Albert Einstein Grammar School. The 15 participating children were first given a crash course in programming and then assembled their computers. Then they had to overcome their first challenge. "The micro:bit is equipped with a sound sensor and various lights. The aim was to switch on a light by clapping your hands," explains Markus. The children used an app with a graphical development environment to do this. "The group was surprisingly diverse. While some children were already advanced, others were programming for the first time," he adds. In the second task, the children then learnt how two micro:bits communicate with each other. But the best came at the end, as the children were allowed to keep their micro:bit computer.

In the meantime, there was a repeat performance, as Markus was able to secure a second donation from the 12x1,000 euro campaign. This time it went to the Riedlen primary school in Gögglingen near Ulm. There, the children first learnt about the MINT coding set from matalab. They then had to use building blocks to control the robot's actions so that it performs certain tasks. The matalab sets will remain in the primary school as a donation and can continue to be used in lessons.

The parents' association of the Peter Rosegger primary school in Graz

Professionally, Astrid Lammer-Sifkovits takes care of finances as a financial accountant at the Graz office. In her private life, she is keen to support schoolchildren. In the parents' association of the Peter Rosegger primary school in Graz, she organises events together with other committed parents, takes care of the culinary side of events such as the summer festival or supports school projects and theatre performances.

With the donation from the 12 x 1,000 campaign, Astrid was able to finance the "Strengthening Community" project together with the parents' association. A team-building event was organised for each class at the primary school to strengthen the class community. After the long weeks and months of homeschooling due to the pandemic, a small contribution to compensate for the children's many disadvantages

Paediatric oncology at Münster University Hospital

Stephan is a Product Architect at COSMO CONSULT. He was one of the first COSMOnauts to put his name in the hat for the 12x1,000 campaign. His favourite: the paediatric oncology department at Münster University Hospital. "The staff here are doing a great job and have gone above and beyond during the pandemic. I wanted to honour this commitment," he explains. He was lucky and was actually able to make the paediatric oncology team happy at the beginning of June. Together with the Diepenbrock bakery from Everswinkel, he handed over six breakfast baskets at the beginning of June. Two wards even received a breakfast directly on site.
